LuminX: An affordable cooling solution for all

In 2023, 691 million people are estimated to live on less than $2.15, the international extreme poverty line. As global temperatures continue to rise, leading to worse living conditions for millions of people worldwide, the poorest are the most vulnerable and will be the most severely affected.

IMF’s recent study of subnational data in 134 countries found that a one-degree increase in temperature leads to a 9.1 percent increase in extreme poverty and a 0.8 percent increase in inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient. Another study estimated the number of people falling into poverty due to climate change by 2030 to be between 32 million and 132 million in most scenarios.

Yet, poor countries and poor people contribute the least to global warming. By comparing countries’ emissions with their extreme poverty rates, we can see the disconnect between the global extreme poor and the countries behind the highest levels of emissions.

The figure below shows that the areas most affected by increasing heat waves due to global warming are mostly lower income group countries

While the rich can afford to have some respite from increasing temperatures, its the less fortunate ones which need assistance. Under such circumstances, its imperative to come up with such a product that can hit two targets with one stone. A cool roof paint applied on the roof surface is one of the solutions: it takes care of thermal comfort as well as affordability.

How cool roof coatings help?

Energy Savings

One of the most immediate benefits of cool roof paints is their potential for energy savings. Lower-income households typically spend a higher percentage of their income on energy bills compared to wealthier households. This financial burden can be particularly pronounced during hot summer months when air conditioning becomes a necessity. This directly has an impact on consumption expenditure in countries like India.Research indicates that homes with cool roofs can experience cooling cost reductions of 20% or more. For families already struggling to make ends meet, these savings can free up funds for other essential needs, such as food, healthcare, and education.

Health Benefits

The health impacts of extreme heat are well-documented, particularly in urban areas where the heat island effect is prevalent. This phenomenon occurs when urban surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete, absorb and re-emit the sun’s heat.Higher temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, respiratory problems, and increased mortality rates, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.According Lancet journal, India lost close to 166 billion work hours due to heat related complications in 2023.

By implementing cool roof paints, communities can lower overall ambient temperatures. Studies show that cooler environments can lead to decreased rates of heat-related health issues. Additionally, cooler indoor spaces enhance comfort, which is crucial for families living in substandard housing conditions. For instance, parents can provide a more conducive environment for their children to study and thrive, contributing to better educational outcomes.

Community Resilience

Cool roofs also play a vital role in enhancing community resilience against climate change. As heatwaves become more frequent due to global warming, communities that implement cool roofing strategies can mitigate some of the adverse effects. This is particularly important in lower-income areas that may lack the resources to cope with extreme weather conditions. By lowering temperatures, cool roofs can reduce the urban heat island effect, helping to create a more sustainable urban environment.

Moreover, community-wide initiatives to adopt cool roofing can foster social cohesion. When neighbourhoods come together to implement energy-efficient solutions, they build a sense of community pride and responsibility.

For Example: Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan, has compulsory cool roof coatings  for designated residencies and work places.

Programs that encourage local residents to participate in cool roof installations can empower them, creating job opportunities and skills development. This not only improves local economies but also enhances the overall resilience of the community.

LuminX strives to provide the most affordable solution in the market. We as a company have inclusivity at its core, serving a wide range of clients coming from a variety of economic stratas. We have collaborated with NGOs, Government bodies and other civil societies to reach the last mile. Our vision is to break the stereotype that cooling is an elitist concept, that the poor cannot afford cooling due to financial constraints.

LuminX Cool roof paints present a unique opportunity to enhance the lives of lower-income communities. By providing energy savings, improving health outcomes, and fostering community resilience, we strive to make a significant impact. However, addressing the barriers to adoption, such as initial costs and lack of awareness, is essential for maximizing their benefits. By prioritizing cool roofs as part of broader urban sustainability initiatives, we can work towards a more equitable and livable environment for all.
